ASU International Exchange Program Policies


As part of the online application process for the International Exchange Program at Arizona State University (ASU), applicants digitally sign documents to confirm their understanding of and agreement to abide by the following policies if accepted as a Participant:
  1. The Participant will be enrolled as a non-degree exchange student attending ASU for credit at his/her home institution.  The Participant will not attempt to be admitted to a degree program at ASU that takes place during the term of the exchange program.
     
  2. The Participant will participate in a student exchange program in the United States of America (USA) and will be granted J-1 Exchange Visitor - Student immigration status by the USA government for the duration of this program.  The Participant will not seek to change this visa/immigration status and will leave the USA as instructed at the end of the program.
     
  3. The Participant understands that the maximum duration of an exchange program is two semesters.
    • Students applying for academic year (fall and spring semesters): Will be enrolled at ASU for the fall and spring semesters only.  The Participant will not seek an extension of the program.
    • Students applying for one semester (fall or spring semester only): Will be enrolled at ASU for one semester only.  The Participant may be granted an extension of his/her program for a maximum of one extra semester with the permission of his/her home institution and the ASU Study Abroad Office.
       
  4. The Participant may be allowed to take upper-level (300-400) or graduate-level (500-700) courses only on the basis of his/her academic credentials and with the permission of the academic unit offering the desired course (if required).
     
  5. The Participant is not allowed to enroll in courses in the following academic units without prior approval from the academic unit: College of Law (graduate-level courses only), the College of Nursing and Health Innovation, the Design School, and the Master of Business Administration program.  The Participant understands that undergraduate-level courses in the College of Law can be taken upon availability.  In addition, the Participant is restricted from courses in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication with the prefix JMC (journalism).  The Participant understands that course enrollment options may be very limited in the School of Engineering, the School of Business, the College of Technology and Innovation, and the Department of Kinesiology.
     
  6. The Participant understands that at the time of arrival at ASU, many classes might already be full, so the Participant will start the course registration process as soon as s/he receives the admission information from the ASU Study Abroad Office.  The Participant understands that s/he is not guaranteed entrance to all courses s/he would like to enroll in and s/he has prepared a list of alternate courses in which to enroll.  The Participant understands that all courses listed in the ASU course catalog are not necessarily offered every semester.
     
  7. To remain in good standing at ASU and to comply with USA immigration regulations, the Participant must maintain full-time student status at ASU.  This means that each semester, the Participant must register for and complete a minimum of:
    • 12 credits of 100- to 400-level undergraduate coursework -OR-
    • 9 credits of 500-level graduate coursework (for graduate students only) -OR-
    • 12 credits of a combination of 100- to 500- level undergraduate and graduate coursework (with additional approval)
       
  8. The Participant understands that all courses s/he enrolls in must be for graded credit and that full-time student status does not include coursework that will receive the following grade results: Pass (P), Audit (X), or Withdrawal (W).
     
  9. As an exchange student, the Participant understands that s/he will only be allowed to work at ASU for a maximum of twenty hours per week for the duration of the exchange program.  The Participant understands that s/he will not be allowed to be employed by any organization other than ASU.  The Participant will not seek any employment outside of ASU while an exchange student at ASU.
     
  10. The Participant consents to give the staff of the Study Abroad Office at Arizona State University full access to educational records/transcripts for purposes of the exchange program facilitation.
     
  11. The Participant understands that after the completion of each semester, academic performance records (i.e. grades, credits, courses) will be sent directly to the home institution.  The Participant will not be able to request a transcript from ASU and must request a copy of his/her ASU academic performance record from the home institution.
     
  12. If admitted to the International Exchange Program, the Participant must attend the mandatory international student orientation events, which are normally held one to two weeks before the first day of classes.
