Program Snapshot

  • Available to students who have completed the equivalent of one year of Armenian in the ASU Critical Language Institute. Program is available on a case by case basis to other students with previous study of Armenian language.
  • Courses offered in multiple levels of Armenian language study, as well as in history, political science, art history and religion.
  • English is the primary language of instruction until students can be mainstreamed into regular YSU courses.
  • Possibility of participating in an internship for further professional development.




Program takes place at Yerevan State University in Yerevan, Armenia.

Located in the heart of the Caucasus mountains, with stunning views of Mount Ararat, Yerevan is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Armenia. A compact city with a population of roughly one million, Yerevan offers a wide variety of educational and cultural opportunities, in a friendly and safe environment. One of the oldest cities of the world, Yerevan is dotted with ancient churches, monuments, and archeological sites.

Academic Program & Courses

Students will be tested on-site for language ability. Please note that students studying any languages other than Armenian or Russian must contact Andrew Gunn ( in the Melikian Center for approval prior to applying.

Yerevan State University will offer each term, 8 semester credits of intensive Armenian language instruction, 3 semester credits of Armenian history, and 3 semester credits of either Armenian politics or Armenian religious studies (14 credits per semester). Barrett Honors College students can also receive regular advisement on their senior honors theses.

Courses available include Armenian Language, Armenian Literature, Armenian History, Persian Language, Turkish Language, Arabic Language, Russian Language, Russian Literature, Russian History, International Relations and Armenia, International Relations and Post-Soviet Countries, plus additional topics.

Students will live with a host family, who will provide 3 meals a day. Host families are decided upon by YSU administration and students will receive more information upon completion of their application materials.


Individuals with disabilities may find accessibility and accommodation in one of more of this program’s locations very different from what you find in the United States.  Depending on the program, there may be a great deal of walking or the regular use of public transportation.  The Study Abroad Office cannot guarantee access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites on this program. 

Although ASU cannot guarantee the accessibility of all program sites, students with disabilities can and do study abroad.  Upon request, the ASU Study Abroad Office can provide information about the availability of accommodations and accessible facilities on this specific program and can help you determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs.

Cost Information

Partnership program participants will NOT pay ASU tuition for the courses completed abroad.  Instead, participants will pay a Program Fee as a condition of participation. Partnership program participants are also responsible for paying a non-refundable $50 Application Fee, in addition to the published Program Fee. All other costs associated with participation in the program are the responsibility of the individual student. Be sure to reference the cost sheet above for fall, spring and academic year cost information.

The program may allow for time which can be spent in non-program activities. Participants may wish to travel, sight-see or participate in activities or events in which they have a personal interest. Please note that the participant is fully responsible for making arrangements and for all costs of transportation, lodging, food and additional expenses that may be associated with any non-program activities.
