The Open Campus program at the CIEE Global Institute – Buenos Aires offers maximum flexibility to engage and experience Buenos Aires in your own way. Match the academic experience with your interests, aspirations, and degree requirements by matching yoru academic track with optional academic projects.

CIEE Open Campus programs offer students the opportunity to earn 6 credits per 6-week block. Students are able to participate in one of the following program options:
  • 1 block to earn 6 credits (ASU Session A or B)
  • 2 blocks to earn 12 credits (ASU Session C)
  • 3 blocks to earn 18 credits (ASU Session C)
No matter how you build your program, you’ll surround yourself with Spanish language, Argentine culture, and people throughout the city of Buenos Aires. Live with an Argentine host family, and study in modern classrooms at the Global Institute. Get out and learn more about Buenos Aires, Argentina and South America during integrated co-curricular and extra-curricular outings and structured study tours.

Students can also opt to combine locations across the CIEE Open Campus locations – in Berlin, Cape Town, London, Madrid, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Santiago, Shanghai, and Sydney – to create a truly individualized study abroad experience.

Location Details

Being one of the twenty largest cities in the world has its benefits. Buenos Aires offers a vibrant theater district, shops and dynamic neighborhoods. Stately architecture and a steady influx of European immigrants have earned it the nickname Paris of South America. With a population of 13 million, Buenos Aires offers a rich array of educational and cultural opportunities.  Founded in 1536, this bustling metropolis reveals influence of Europe and the Middle East and is also the world's leading Spanish language publishing hub.

Visa Information

U.S. citizens may require a visa* in order to participate in this program. Please contact CIEE for more information. Limited information about the visa application process may be provided by the ASU Study Abroad Office and/or CIEE, but it is your sole responsibility to research, apply, and secure a visa. Failure to obtain a visa may result in your inability to participate and, ultimately, your withdrawal from the program, subject to the terms of the Study Abroad Withdrawal Policy

PLEASE NOTE: Visa requirements for non U.S. citizens may differ from those for U.S. citizens; students who are not U.S. citizens are advised to contact their International Coordinator and begin independently researching the visa requirements for their nationality as soon as possible.

Academics

Academic Program & Courses

Where You'll Study - CIEE Global Institute
Courses taught at the CIEE Global Institute are typically for CIEE students only. Each course is a full semester in content taught in a six-week block, so the pace is accelerated and the workload demanding. Classes are scheduled Monday-Friday and meet either two, three, or four times per week. Required co-curricular excursions complement your coursework and immerse you in Argentine history and culture.

IMPORTANT COURSE INFORMATION: Course offerings change from one semester to the next as well as per Open Campus block.  Check CIEE's website for information on the specific semester and block(s) you plan to pursue to determine course offerings.  The pre-approved course list on the Study Abroad Office website includes all classes that have been offered and does not guarantee that these classes will be available during the block you plan to study abroad.

Optional Academic Projects
CIEE Academic Projects are designed based on each student’s academic interest, individual learning goals, qualifications and résumé, and placement availability. Academic Projects provide students a unique opportunity to learn first-hand about the economic, cultural, and social structures of the Argentine workplace and volunteer environments. Students interested in an Academic Project must submit additional materials as part of their application. Academic projects include:
  • CIEE Directed Research - Pursue an academically meaningful research project of your own design
  • CIEE Service-Learning Project - Combine course-based learning with practical, relevant project experience to meet a community-defined need
IMPORTANT: Academic projects are only offered during blocks 2 and 3 and students must be in Buenos Aires for at least two consecutive blocks in order to be eligible for an academic project.

Course Levels, Credit & Grades
CIEE Open Campus programs follow U.S. grading and credit standards. Attendance requirements are strict and grades will be impacted by missed classes due to the intensive nature of 6-week course duration.

Program Housing


Homestays provide an excellent opportunity for cultural immersion for a complete Argentine cultural experience. Students will be placed with carefully screened homestay families. Each family has at least one member that can speak English. The commute to class takes an average of 30 minutes by public transportation. Hosts may be nuclear families with young children, single professionals, young couples with no children, or older couples.

All homestays provide two meals per day: breakfast and either lunch or dinner. Host families and students will decide meals together.

Below you will find information that may help you in planning for your study abroad experience. Early discussions and planning can help to support you in having a positive experience abroad. We invite you to meet with the International Coordinator for this program to discuss any questions or concerns you may have.

Physical Considerations

Study abroad participants may find themselves walking or taking public transit abroad more frequently than they are accustomed at their home campus.

Disability Accommodations Abroad

Individuals with disabilities can and do study abroad, but may find accessibility and accommodation in one of more of this program’s locations very different from the United States. For example, in Argentina, the facilities for individuals with disabilities are often lacking compared to the US. Infrastructure for individuals with visual, hearing, and physical disabilities is rare. Wheelchair users will have a hard time finding ramps and lowered curbs; and sidewalks tend to be broken and uneven. Most hotels are not adapted for wheelchair use.

In general, the Study Abroad Office cannot guarantee access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites on this program. Any student who anticipates needing any kind of special accommodation due to a disability should contact the ASU Study Abroad Office early in the planning process to investigate the availability of accommodations (including accessible facilities) on this specific program. Contact the Disability Resource Center and your Disability Access Consultant to include them in the discussion; be sure to give your Disability Access Consultant permission to speak with the Study Abroad Office on your behalf. LGBTQIA Students Abroad

Students of diverse sexual orientations or gender identities will find that the social climate, laws, and norms of other cultures will often differ from the U.S. If you identify as a lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, or queer student - or if you are still exploring your identity - you may face unique challenges when traveling abroad.

We encourage students who identify as members of the LGBTQIA community to visit the U.S. Department of State website for helpful information about laws and attitudes in this program’s locations, including pre-travel tips and advice on staying safe while abroad. Gender Identity Abroad

When traveling abroad, you may find different gender roles and norms than you’re used to. It’s possible that you may be treated differently or be expected to treat others differently based on your (or their) gender identity. For example, in Argentina, some women travelers may experience harassment in the form of cat calling and other forms of objectification by local men. Students are encouraged to travel in groups and in mixed company whenever possible.

Racial and Ethnic Minorities Abroad

Students of different ethnic and racial backgrounds may encounter unique challenges transitioning from life here in the United States to life as a student living abroad, including but not limited to access to personal care products and services.

You can prepare yourself for the situations you may experience by researching the ethnic composition of your host country and exploring its history of racial and ethnic relations. We encourage students to start that research on our Racial and Ethnic Minority Students page.

Cost

Cost Information

Partnership program participants will NOT pay ASU tuition for the courses completed abroad.  Instead, participants will pay a Program Fee as a condition of participation. Partnership program participants are also responsible for paying a non-refundable $50 Application Fee, in addition to the published Program Fee. All other costs associated with participation in the program are the responsibility of the individual student. Be sure to reference the Fall semester and Spring semester for information on current program fees and any additional estimated expenses.

The program may allow for time which can be spent in non-program activities. Participants may wish to travel, sightsee or participate in activities or events in which they have a personal interest. Please note that the participant is fully responsible for making arrangements and for all costs of transportation, lodging, food and additional expenses that may be associated with any non-program activities.

Studying abroad is an investment in your future, which requires careful planning and management. However, the personal, academic, and professional rewards that you will gain from this experience will last a lifetime. You should carefully consider costs, budgets and financing when selecting and preparing for your experience abroad.
