Courses are taught at Laval University which is one of the oldest Francophone university's in North America. Its summer French language program is highly respected and time-tested. For the second time, Barrett, the Honors College at ASU will join together with the School of Global Studies to offer an incredible five-week study tour of mainland China. Specifically designed for students with no specialized background, this program provides a comprehensive introduction to China's traditional civilization, as well as the dynamic changes globalization has induced. Visiting several distinct regions, participants will experience all aspects of Chinese life: palaces and pagodas; skyscrapers and nature preserves; industry and art. Special emphasis will be placed on meeting locals and giving students a chance to reflect on China's challenges and prospects first hand.

Arizona State University offers a combination package of study and travel in China. The first six weeks is an Arts, Language & Culture Study Program in Beijing. Part II is a Journey to the West of China on the famous Silk Road. Those participating in Part I will leave for China on May 30, 2008 and study in Beijing until July 12. Those joining Part II will start the excursion on July 12, 2008. Before returning to the US, we will stop by Hong Kong to observe the Pearl of Orient, in comparison with Shanghai. Students may earn 6 – 9 credits upon completion of this program.
China Dance
Arizona State University offers a combination package of study and travel in China. The first four weeks are an intensive Dance Program in Beijing, and the last week is an adventurous and educational cultural excursion. Participants will depart for China on May 10, 2008, study in Beijing until June 6, and start the journey to Lhasa, Xi'an and Hong Kong returning to the U.S. on June 18, 2008. Students may earn 8 credits upon completion of this program.

This course examines the business challenges and opportunities that are present in China. Today, China is one of the most attractive business environments in the world, with $60 billion in foreign direct investments in 2005, alone. While China has lured investors, many multinational corporations face challenges operating in China's complex business environment. This course exposes students to various frameworks to understand international business, focusing particularly on China and its unique circumstances. This program also has a Spring semester pre-requisite course for the trip to China. As such, we will focus on understanding the firms and industries that we will be experiencing firsthand.

Ecuador Tropical Field Biology
The upper Amazon rainforest of eastern Ecuador constitutes a mega-diversity "hot spot" within the most biodiverse of all terrestrial ecosystems--the vast Amazon lowlands--and is thus the best place on earth to study and experience tropical biology. Our program focuses on (1) a broad introduction to the biology, ecology, and conservation of tropical rainforests, and (2) the opportunity for students to learn a range of approaches and techniques for studying field biology in a tropical setting. The program is especially beneficial for students considering more advanced studies in tropical biology or graduate school in organismic biology. It is an outstanding educational adventure for non-biology students interested in human aspects of tropical conservation. It offers learning and research opportunities at multiple levels from beginner to advanced.

The Amazon and Andes Field School provides interdisciplinary opportunity to study Quichua language, Amazonian biology or culture while experiencing the rich world of the Andes and Amazon. Complete your Senior Seminar in London (class meets all day Mondays plus homework) as well as finish your Applied Studies class there for London work experience (24 hours a week, Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday, in a placement, plus class homework time) to include on your resume! Group excursions included are Friday trips (likely to Windsor & Eton, and Brighton, though locations are subject to change) and West End Theatre nights. Arizona State University offers students the opportunity to study the culture, politics and society of the Republic of Ghana on site in the 2008 Summer Session. The program combines a classroom and field-based introduction to Africa's/Ghana's history, social structure, politics, economy, and cultures with a period of immersion in an on-going research project with local researchers and faculty. A portion of assigned reading will be done prior to departure. Active participation in all scheduled activities is central to the program's success.

This two-week international studio is based in Thessaloniki, Greece, at the campus of Dimitris Perrotis Agricultural College and will be a project-oriented international study program with excursions and special cultural events organized by ASU and Greek faculty. The project will focus on master plan development and preparation of landscape design plans for the 100-acre campus. The goal is to transform the existing grounds and buildings into a sustainable model for campus development. Students will work as a team, each building on specific interests and strengths to develop concepts for future form of the campus. This program also provides an opportunity for students to learn more about Greek culture and daily life.

Arizona State University and the Institute of Terrorism Research and Response, in a joint project, will hold a 10-day, hands-on class at the world renowned ITRR facilities in Jerusalem and around Israel. This extensive on-site training provides attendees a glimpse into the facilities and protected environments that Israel has developed over the years to deal with terror related threats and risks. The experience includes intelligence briefings, on-site visits, and lecture presentations. Students are also given the opportunity to witness current political events and address current political issues that reach far beyond the borders of Israel and the United States.

The College of Design at Arizona State University offers this three-week program in Italy to enable the participants to study the relationship between context and design in some of the most exciting European cities: Rome, Florence, Venice, and Milan. The program structure, with guided field trips, seminars, and in-depth, on-site analysis, will broaden the participants' perception of design as an active and dynamic part of larger cultural issues.

The W. P. Carey School of Business offers students the unique opportunity to take ACC 240: Uses of Accounting II, taught in English by an ASU professor, in scenic Castellanza, Italy. ACC 240 is a required course of all business majors, to be taken after completion of ACC 230. Participating in this program allows students to internationalize their undergraduate experience while completing required coursework ahead of schedule. Generally students take ACC 240 in their third semester at ASU.

The Arizona State University Summer Program in Japan will be held at Hiroshima Shudo University (HSU) in the City of Hiroshima. You will earn 5 credits in Japanese Language and 2 credits in Japanese Religion and Culture over a 5 week course while staying at the beautiful Seminar House on the HSU campus. This program includes weekend trips and an overnight trip to historical cultural sites in and around Hiroshima. We will leave for Hiroshima International Airport via Narita (Tokyo) Airport on May 14 and arrive at Hiroshima on May 15. Instruction begins on May 19 and ends on June 20.

This travel program into the Arizona-Sonora Borderlands is jointly conducted by ASU School of Social Work and Borderlinks, which is a non-profit bi-national educational agency in the Arizona/Sonora border region. Students will be provided with an immersion experience with a focus on learning about the cultural, globalization, social, and political dynamics associated with the migration experience along the US/Mexican border.
Merida and Mexico City
The ASU Program in Mexico consists of five days in Mexico City followed by four weeks in Merida, Yucatan, for 5 weeks total. The program includes substantial cultural travel in the Mayan region, in such world-renowned sites as Chichen-Itza, Tulum, Xcaret, Celestun, Izamal and the international resort town of Playa del Carmen in the Riviera Maya. To maximize the language immersion experience, students will reside with local Merida families, and will take classes with ASU instructors, as well as local Merida experts in Mayan culture.Oaxaca, Mexico (This program has been canceled for summer 2008)
The Study Abroad program in Oaxaca enable students to explore the ways in which Indigenous people thrive in the midst of a globalizing world. Oaxaca has the largest indigenous population of any Mexican state, with 16 different indigenous groups. Students will speak firsthand with local artists, artisans and indigenous leaders as well as visiting indigenous communities.

This program offers students a first-hand exploration of the unique cultures and environments of both New Zealand and Fiji. The New Zealand session focuses more on urban and environmental health, and the Fiji session focuses on indigenous health. The tenth annual ASU Summer Program in Romania is a four-week session at the Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, designed to give participants a comprehensive view of the rich and unique cultural history of Pre/Post Communist Central Eastern Europe. It combines features of a traditional study abroad program and excursions, with emphasis on language, history, politics and cultural studies. The classroom work is complemented by an intensive program of guided visits to museums, historical sites, and other outstanding centers of Eastern European cultural heritage and by a one week cultural trip to the capitals of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The East-Central Europe cultural trip includes visits to: Budapest, Vienna, Prague, and Bratislava and a comprehensive overview of the European Union's political, cultural, and social structures.

The Barrett Honors College offers a unique five-week study abroad program to Russia focusing on the historical development of the region from the Middle Ages to the present. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the ways in which major socio-political trends in Russia have influenced art, literature, science, and business. As an academically rigorous program, participants will be expected to write two papers and create one journal to document all they have experienced.

South Africa Human Rights and Peace Building
Arizona State University offers students the opportunity to study the culture, political history and religion of the Republic of South Africa on site in the 2008 Summer Session. Students begin the program with a two week cultural intensive followed by a two week focus on the theory and practice of Transitional Justice and Social Healing. The final week is spent as a capstone.
Cape Town, South Africa Internships
Students will have the opportunity to earn 6 credit hours of coursework (either SGS 484 or 2 BIS courses: one 3-credit seminar and one 3-credit internship) while gaining practical work experience and enjoying cultural visits. Placements will focus on charities, non-governmental organizations, community based work, and education in the following areas: creative arts, social/care giving/health, environment/sustainable living, and education & youth development. This will not be a high-powered, corporate-style placement program but will, nonetheless, be life-changing and résumé-enhancing.

The Schools of Sustainability, Planning, and Global Studies offer this 25 day program in Thailand designed to give participants a close-up view of Thailand’s efforts to uniquely restructure its economy, urban system, and landscape based on principles of sustainability, happiness, and increased self-sufficiency. The course focuses on developmental dynamics in local areas throughout the country where strong globalization forces, associated with Thailand’s open economy, intersect with deeply embedded local cultures. Students will learn through constant interaction with Thai faculty and students from local universities. Briefings by key Thai stakeholders in government, NGOs, and the private sector constitute an important component of the program.

Prehistoric Southwest New Mexico
Arizona State University is pleased to announce its 2008 summer program in Prehistoric Southwestern Archaeology. The primary field site is in the Black Range in southwest New Mexico, in the beautiful and remote eastern Mimbres area.
Undergraduate and graduate students will receive training in archaeological excavation, survey, artifact recording and analysis while participating in ongoing research concerning social and economic reorganization in southwestNew Mexico in the 13th and 14th centuries. Along with essential technical skills, the program emphasizes the construction of research strategies that are effective in answering anthropological questions. Field training is integrated with lectures and discussions concerning archaeological method and theory and the natural environment, prehistory, and ethnography of the Southwest.
