Athens, Crete & Rome Honors

The Barrett Honors College offers a unique five-week study abroad program to the premier Mediterranean destinations of Athens, Greece; the Greek Island of Crete; and Rome, Italy. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the early life, literature, arts, and culture of these diverse and exciting places, as well as studying travel literature and creating a journal account of their own travel experiences.

Program Cost: $3,500
$400.00 deposit fee required for enrollment. Tuition and fees are not included with the program cost.

Locations

ATHENS - MAY 24 - MAY 29
A half-day tour begins the exploration of Athena's city--the heart of the classical world and site of the first modern Olympic games in 1896 and of the most recent summer games. Touring the Acropolis and the beautiful, mystical Delphi are just two of the adventures awaiting the group. Seeing the famous "Mask of Agamemnon" in the National Museum of Archaeology and strolling through the Agora where Socrates taught are additional delights.

CRETE - MAY 29 - JUNE 3
The largest of the Greek Islands, Crete is home to the ancient Minoan culture exemplified in the magnificient Palace of Knossos, build around 1700 BCE. The program includes a tour of this site, of most of the island, and of delightful seaside towns and medieval monasteries tucked away in mountain gorges.

ROME - JUNE 3 - 26
The Eternal City provides a dazzling wealth of sights. Rome's contributions to world culture are unparalleled, having left its indelible mark on art, architecture, religion, literature, and politics. Field trips include St. Peter's and the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, Roman Forum, the Christian catacombs along the Appia Antica, and Pompeii. A full-day trip to Florence with a guided walking tour is also included.

Eligibility

Online registrations with a $400 deposit ($50 refundable) are due by February 4, 2008. However, enrollment is limited and students are encouraged to register early. (If the program is filled before your registration is processed, your account will not be charged until or unless you accept a position in the program.)

Participating students will receive seven ASU credits. All students must enroll in the three honors classes.

Living Accommodations

In Athens and Crete, students will stay in twin or triple rooms in four-star hotels, breakfast included. In Rome, students will be housed in centrally-located twin or triple apartments or pensiones with cooking facilities.

Cost Information

The cost of $3,500 (subject to possible change) includes: bus transfers to the Athens hotel and seaport & to and from the port/airport in Crete and Rome; boat trip from Athens to Crete; flight from Crete to Rome; travel pass in Rome; housing; breakfasts in Athens and Crete; four group meals; full orientation meetings and materials in each location; course-sponsored field trips; 24/7 access to the program director and to an experienced American Institute of Foreign Studies staff member. The cost of $4,995 includes: the above and group airfare from Newark, NJ to Athens and from Rome to Newark. Not included: Tuition; transportation to and from Newark, NJ; optional weekend trip to Venice; additional food; passports, books and personal expenses.

The Program may allow for time which can be spent in non-Program activities. Participants may wish to travel, sightsee or participate in activities or events in which they have a personal interest. Please note that the participant is fully responsible for making arrangements and for all costs of transportation, lodging, food and additional expenses that may be associated with any non-Program activities.
