The College of Design at Arizona State University offers this three-week program in Italy to enable the participants to study the relationship between context and design in some of the most exciting European cities: Rome, Florence, Venice, and Milan. The program structure, with guided field trips, seminars, and in-depth, on-site analysis, will broaden the participants' perception of design as an active and dynamic part of larger cultural issues.

Locations
ROME
Our trip begins in Rome, thus creating the foundation of a study from antiquity to present time. In the eternal city our group will study how design has contributed to shape the environment over centuries. The focus of our visit will be the exceptional monuments of the empire, the Vatican, the Baroque treasures, and contemporary work by Roger Piano and Zaha Hadid.
FLORENCE
Enriched by banking and trade, Florence was also inspired by the ideals of classical antiquity and became the center of the Italian Renaissance, nurturing as spirit of scientific investigation, innovation in architecture and creativity in the arts. Our group will explore all those fascinating aspects of this city that was declared World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1982.
VENICE (MESTRE) & SURROUNDING REGION
The objective of this part of the trip will be to research the culture that resulted from the unique environment of Venice. Here, in-depth analysis of some of the most memorable projects by Carlo Scarpa, including a field trip to Possagno, to explore his acclaimed addition to the Canova Museum and the monumental complex at San’t Vito d’Altivole. In Verona we will study Scarpa’s masterpiece, the Castelvecchio. We will also visit Villa Rotonda, by Andrea Palladio, outside Vicenza.
MILAN
This world renowned center of design will offer our group the opportunity to visit showrooms where the most innovative design is exhibited. Hosted by a local design expert, we will also visit the grounds of the prestigious “Triennale di Milano”.
Eligibility
This three-week program is open to undergraduate and graduate students from the College of Design and related disciplines that are in good standing at the University. While the program stipulates no minimum grade-point average, applicants must present a transcript demonstrating that they are serious students who will make the most of this opportunity. The program is also open to non-ASU students.
Applications with a $275 non-refundable deposit are due on or before March 3, 2008. Applications after this date will be considered on a space available basis.
Academic Program
The six-credit component will consist of a seminar, lectures, field trips, and object context analysis. Each participant will select and explore a topic(s): furniture, street graphic, a particular artistic movement and its relationship with society, the work of a particular designer, or other related issues, and will develop sketches, and notes interpreting what is seen and experienced. Relevant questions and findings will be discussed in seminars. Students will be required to participate in all seminars and field trips, and to keep a sketchbook with daily entries and sketches.

Well-located hotels have been selected in the cities being visited, in order to provide opportunities to interact and experience their unique context.
Cost Information
The cost of $4,550 (subject to change) includes: round-trip airfare from Phoenix to Rome and return from Milan, hotels, buffet breakfast, group transportation, and entrance fee. Not included: Tuition and fees for 6 credit hours, optional excursions, additional meals, health insurance, personal expenses, and transportation to and from the airport.
The program may allow for time which can be spent in non-program activities. Participants may wish to travel, sightsee or participate in activities or events in which they have a personal interest. Please note that the participant is fully responsible for making arrangements and for all costs of transportation, lodging, food and additional expenses that may be associated with any non-program activities.
