The Study Abroad program in Oaxaca enable students to explore the ways in which Indigenous people thrive in the midst of a globalizing world. Oaxaca has the largest indigenous population of any Mexican state, with 16 different indigenous groups. Students will speak firsthand with local artists, artisans and indigenous leaders as well as visiting indigenous communities.

Program Cost: $1,470
$275.00 deposit fee required for enrollment.
Tuition and fees are not included with the program cost.

Phoenix, Arizona (May 12, 2008)
In Phoenix, students will attend an orientation at Arizona State University prior to departing for Oaxaca City.
Valley of Oaxaca and Oaxaca city, Mexico (May 14 – 22, 2008)
The Valley of Oaxaca in southwestern Mexico is filled with crafts villages, regal ruined cities, and indigenous culture. This Valley is the heartland of Mexico’s indigenous Zapotec people and a place where villages famed for weaving and woodcarving thrive. Teotitlán del Valle, “Place of the Gods” in Nahuatl, is home to renowned Zapotec weavers famed for their beautiful woven wool carpets. Monte Albán, where a majestic city stood for 1000 years, is one of Mesoamerica’s most regal and spectacular ruined cities. Many experts believe it to have been America’s earliest metropolis. Oaxaca de Juárez, the capital city of the state of Oaxaca, is one of Mexico’s most enjoyable post-colonial cities. UNESCO has recognized Oaxaca City as one of several world sites belonging to the “Cultural Patrimony of Mankind.”
Eligibility
This program is open to all ASU students. Proficiency in Spanish is NOT a prerequisite for students enrolled in the POL, SBS, HON or MAS courses. For students enrolled in SPA, some previous knowledge of Spanish is required.
You will be required to submit your $275 (non-refundable) deposit with the online portion of your application. However, applications will be accepted until the program is full. Non-ASU students will need to apply to the university via the internet before applying to the program.
Academic Program
Students will take one of the following courses:

- MAS 591 | Fair Trade and Indigenous Cultures in Oaxaca (3)
- POL 454 | Mexico: Politics, Economy, Cultures (3)
- SBS 450 | ST: Topics in Local-Global (3)
- SPA 394 | ST: Spanish Language and Indigenous Cultures in Oaxaca (3)
Living Accommodations
Students will be housed in double occupancy rooms in guest houses or posadas for the duration of the program. Two meals per day as well as transportation to and from all programmed activities are included.
Cost Information
The cost of $ 1, 470 (subject to change) includes double-occupancy room, 2 meals per day, excursions, staff support, and all program activities and facilities. Not included: ASU tuition for 3 credit hrs. and fees, airfare, books, health/travel insurance, and personal expenses.
