The program will be based in the Spanish colonial city of Quito, national capital and UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, as well as the Andean city of Ambato. From there we will travel past the Tungurahua Volcano and the beautiful town of Banos to Puyo, ‘Gateway to the Amazon’ basin region and the rain forest, and finally to Tena, where we will have the opportunity to canoe on the Napo River, one of the Tributaries of the Amazon River. While in the Andean region Ambato will be our base, and our trip will begin and end with several days in Quito.
Eligibility
This program is designed for graduate students in the Global Technology and Development (GTD) concentration of the Master’s in Technology degree. Interested and motivated graduate students and undergraduate students from other programs are invited to apply as well. All participants must complete an application, and non-GTD students have an additional ‘statement of interest’ as well, to submit.
You will be required to submit your $350 ($275 non-refundable) deposit with the online portion of your application. Applications will be accepted until program is full.
Academic Program
This course provides students with a framework for synthesizing the complex issues involved in social, economic and political development in Ecuador, and making the most of the experiential learning that will take place during the course of the trip. The meetings that we will have in Quito, Ambato, Banos, Puyo and Tena will provide you with opportunities to listen and participate in discussions of political, social and economic issues that the country is facing and solving, with government officials, development agencies, university faculty and students, and citizens from a variety of occupations. Students will be directed to develop questions, and they will keep a journal throughout the trip, culminating in a final paper based on the journal.
