This program explores London through its image on film. We will experience places already made familiar through the eyes of directors, screenwriters and production designers. This image of the city has many sides: from the darkly futuristic in Children of Men to the romcom of Bridget’s Diary the program will reveal the many faces of the city of London as seen through the medium of film.

Locations

The program is organized around visiting London locations which have been featured in films over the past century and speculation on the relationship between film and architecture.

A visit to London provides a unique urban experience which could not be more different to Phoenix in its culture and infrastructure.  The program will take advantage of cultural institutions unique to London including the British Film Institute, the Tate Modern, and the National Gallery.  In addition, it will explore aspects of the film industry through visits to film studios, local designers and iconic art house cinema.

Eligibility

This program is open to all ASU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as students from other universities.

You will be required to submit your $275 (non-refundable) deposit with the online portion of your application. Applications will be accepted on a space available basis.

Academic Program

 

The six credit component will consist of seminars, lectures, field trips and analysis of the relationship between film and the city.  Each student will select and explore a topic. For example:

Design in architecture and the moving image (set design/film influenced architecture/interactive environments/mobile spaces);

Film, place and urban identity (iconography, landscape and urban form/industrial and post/industrial landscapes/tourism, heritage and city branding);

Time, memory and urban form (narrative and expressive spaces in film/monuments and spaces of memory);

Virtual environments (screen/based technologies/electronic billboards/interactive facades);

The final output will be visual: drawn/photographed/filmed.

Living Accommodations

Students will stay in shared accommodation in Great Portland Street, a beautiful very centrally located area, within walking distance of Baker Street and Regents Park.

Cost Information

The cost of $2700 (subject to change) includes: lodging, entry fees to museums and local transportation.  Not included: ASU tuition and fees for 6 credits, airfare (approx. $1200), passport, health insurance, meals, personal travel and personal expenses.
