Locations

CAPE TOWN
Located on the southern tip of the African continent, Cape Town is a city with a diverse range of attractions, sights, and activities to offer. From lavish and luxurious to back-packing on a budget, Cape Town has something for everyone at any time. From the landmark beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay to the vibrant V&A Waterfront and Cape Town city center and the award winning wine farms, it is regarded as one of the most beautiful regions in the world. The city is a rare cultural gem, resulting from the amalgamation of Indonesian, French, Dutch, British, and German settlers and the local Bushman and indigenous tribes.

The program includes a guided sightseeing tour of Cape Town, a guided township visit, a full-day guided excursion to the Cape of Good Hope National Park, and a full-day guided excursion to Stellenbosch with a visit to the winery for a tour and wine tasting. Students will also visit the District Six Museum, the Taal Monument in Paarl, the Robben Island prison museum (where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned), Table Mountain, and the South African Parliament. Also included: an overnight trip to the Garden Route Game Reserve, a private reserve which is home to the “Big Five”: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros. While there, students will participate in a game drive or “safari” and meet and talk with conservationists.

Academic Program

BIS 401/BIS 484: Applied Interdisciplinary Studies (the internship) will provide students with the opportunity to have an "in person" learning experience with a culture other than their own. Participants will have non-paid internships with various organizations all over Cape Town. They will learn how individuals work with one another, resolve conflicts, deal with stress, and express their work values and ethics in South Africa. Students will complete 125 hours in their placements which will take place on T/W/Th for the full day. (Fridays will either be for field trips or a free day.)

BIS 402/BIS 494: Senior Seminar: South Africa: Before and After Apartheid - Through a combination of mini-lectures and fieldtrips, students will learn about the history of South Africa, Apartheid, and the transitional era of justice and reconciliation. Students will divide into teams and select a specific topic to explore in-depth and present the results of their explorations to the rest of the class. (This class will meet on Mondays.)
