This course examines the business challenges and opportunities that are present in China. Today, China is one of the most attractive business environments in the world, with $60 billion in foreign direct investments in 2005, alone. While China has lured investors, many multinational corporations face challenges operating in China's complex business environment. This course exposes students to various frameworks to understand international business, focusing particularly on China and its unique circumstances. This program also has a Spring semester pre-requisite course for the trip to China. As such, we will focus on understanding the firms and industries that we will be experiencing firsthand.

Locations
BEIJING - MAY 14 - 20
The course begins with travel to Beijing for company visits that could include IBM, Microsoft, Motorola, Starbucks, or UPS. Cultural experiences in Beijing could include a trip to the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City.
SHANGHAI - MAY 20 - 25.
Corporate visits in Shanghai could include Intel, Honeywell, F+G, Pudong Development Bank, HSBC, Shanghai Stock Exchange, Shanghai Automotive, BaoSteel, and the Suzhou Industrial Zone. Lectures at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE) are planned.
Eligibility
Enrollment is limited to students currently enrolled in the ASU W.P. Carey School of Business MBA Graduate Program. Those MBA students who have been selected to participate must submit an application with a $1450 first payment ($100 nonrefundable) by December 21st.
Academic Program
Through lectures, company visits, cultural visits, interaction with Chinese executives, managers, and students, as well as the assignments, participants will acquire some basic knowledge and appreciation for the following topics: 1) Economic reform and the modern Chinese enterprises (change in state-owned firms and alternative management and leadership models); 2) entrepreneurship, innovation, and the Chinese private sector (high tech zones, challenges of privately-owned domestic firms); 3) Multinational corporations in China (stakeholder relations, expatriate management, and localization); and 4) How Chinese history, culture, and the political system influence business models, management practices, leadership, and employee behavior.
The course will comprise four 4-hour sessions on the ASU Campus (the Spring 2008 course pre-requisite: IBS 594: CW: Doing Business in China (4)) and sixteen 4-hour sessions in China (the course below listed), for a total of 80 contact hours (6 credit hours). The sessions in China will include visits to six to eight companies, the new Shanghai container port, the China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park, and a session at Peking University and at Shanghai Jiaotung University.
All participants will enroll in the following Summer 2008 study abroad course:

Living Accommodations
Students will be housed based on double occupancy in both Beijing and Shanghai. Breakfast is included daily as well as some lunches.
Cost Information
The cost of $4340 (subject to possible change) includes: round trip airfare from Phoenix to China (you must travel as a group but you may have the option to change your return itinerary for an extra fee), local transportation including airfare between Beijing & Shanghai, hotel accommodations (based on double occupancy), breakfast daily & some lunches, cultural experiences, and an International Student Identification Card (ISIC). Not included: ASU tuition and fees, additional meals (approximately $30/day), and personal expenses/additional leisure activities.
The Program may allow for time which can be spent in non-Program activities. Participants may wish to travel, sightsee, or participate in activities or events in which they have a personal interest. Please note that the participant is fully responsible for making arrangements and for all costs of transportation, lodging, food and additional expenses that may be associated with any non-Program activities.
