Freshman Costa Rica Experience

If you are not currently enrolled at ASU, you must apply for admission at ASU before completing the Study Abroad online application.

The Freshman Costa Rica Experience is a customized program tailored to introduce ASU's freshman Education majors to the Spanish language and Latin Culture. Students will have the opportunity to become acquainted with the people, language and culture of Costa Rica firsthand! Participants will spend 2 weeks in a rigorous language and culture course at ASU before embarking on a 2-week journey to San Jose, Costa Rica. Upon their return, students will compose a reflective essay detailing their thoughts on the Experience.

$275.00 deposit fee required for enrollment. Tuition and fees are not included with the program cost.

Locations

Upon arrival in Costa Rica, students will spend two days observing students and teachers at the Lincoln School, a current site for ASU's Student Teach Abroad program. Students will also observe in a public primary and public high school. In addition to their observations, participants will have the opportunity to explore three of Costa Rica's great attractions: The Arenal Volcano, the Manuel Antonio/La Fortuna beach, and the Rainforest. Excursions to these areas will be custom-designed by ASU's staff accompanying the students. Each aspect of the trip will be carefully planned to maximize the students' cultural and language experience.

Eligibility

The Freshman Costa Rica Experience is open to Education majors with completion of 24-30 credit hours at the conclusion of the Spring 2008 semester. Applicants must have an earned GPA of 2.0 or higher. An interview process will be used to select from the eligible applicants.

Applications with a $275 non-refundable deposit are due on or before January 31, 2008, but applications will be accepted after that date on a space-available basis.

Living Accommodations

Students will be housed in San Jose at the lovely Hotel Brittania. Students will be housed in high quality hotels during excursions to Manuel Antonio and Arenal.

Cost Information

The cost of $2,600 (subject to change) includes program fees, airfare, lodging, meals, local transportation and expenses related to excursions. Not included: ASU tuition and fees, passport expenses, books and personal expenses.

The Program may allow for time which can be spent in non-Program activities. Participants may wish to travel, sightsee or participate in activities or events in which they have a personal interest. Please note that the participant is fully responsible for making arrangements and for all costs of transportation, lodging, food and additional expenses that may be associated with any non-Program activities.
