The 3-week Costa Rica Program offers students an extraordinary immersion learning opportunity by combining an intensive language course and family homestay, with interdisciplinary study of Central America through social & behavioral science perspectives, field study, and excursions. With its remarkable history, rich heritage, and diverse population, Costa Rica’s active participation in today’s globalized world makes it an opportune case study to examine and explore many of the current challenges and dilemmas facing Latin America.

Locations

In the dynamic capital city of San José, host families and classes are based in the San Pedro section of the city, near the University of Costa Rica and Heredia University. Field trips to several locations in beautiful tropical Costa Rica, including weekend excursions to a rainforest preserve and to the Caribbean coast, will make our studies come alive to enhance students’ understanding of the region.

Eligibility

This program is open to students who have completed two years of academic study in good standing (minimum 2.75 G.P.A.). All majors are welcome. Proficiency in Spanish is NOT a prerequisite; language classes will be offered from beginning to advanced levels.

You will be required to submit your $275 (non-refundable) deposit with the online portion of your application. Applications will be accepted until the program is full.

Academic Program

Students must register for 2 courses (total of 6 credit hours), SPA 394 plus one social science section of Central American Studies.

Spanish (SPA394) Students study Spanish in an intensive, small-class, immersion environment. Language classes integrate social issues and are offered at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels.

Central American Studies (ASB 356, GCU 356, POL 356, SBS 356, or SOC 356) Interdisciplinary social science course explores geographic, political, economic, social, and cultural issues of Costa Rica in the Central American context. Will include fieldwork or service internship. General Studies Requirement: G and SB (Global Awareness and Social & Behavioral)

Living Accommodations

Students will be housed with Costa Rican families to enable them to have abundant exposure to Costa Rican society and culture. Host families will provide breakfast, dinner, and laundry service.

Cost Information

The cost of $1850 (subject to possible change) includes: housing, breakfast, dinner, programmed field excursions. Not included: Tuition for 6 credit hours, airfare, lunches, health insurance, additional meals, books, transportation to and from the airport, and personal expenses. The program may allow for time which can be spent in non-program activities.

Participants may wish to travel, sightsee or participate in activities or events in which they have a personal interest. Please note that the participant is fully responsible for making arrangements and for all costs of transportation, lodging, food and additional expenses that may be associated with any non-program activities.
