Locations
SALVADOR DA BAHIA - MAY 18 - JUNE 7
This program will spend about three weeks in the fabulous city of Salvador, a United Nations World Heritage city known for its Baroque architecture, historical sites, museums, as well as music, dance and arts.
TINHARÉ ISLAND - JUNE 8 - 14
This destination is perhaps better known by the name of its largest village: Morro de São Paulo. This is one of the most famous landscapes of Bahia, and it attracts people from all over the world for the charming beauty of its crystal water, white sand beaches and unspoiled natural attractions. We will spend one wonderful week on this island.
We will also visit the small village of Garapuá on Tinharé island, known for its coral reefs and fishing. This is about 4 miles south of Morro de São Paulo, a one-hour ride by tractor cart ride. Take note that Tinharé is an ecological sanctuary and no cars are permitted on the island. People travel by boat, tractor cart, horseback, or on foot.
We will also make a trip to the nearby island of Boipeba, even more remote than Tinharé. Other excursions are planned to scenic attractions near Salvador, such as the northern coast village of Pontal, Imbassai and Mangue, as well as to the Chapada Diamantina, known for its waterfalls, rugged mountains, fantastic rock formations and natural quartzite caves.
Eligibility
The program is open to all prospective students interested in Brazilian culture and the Portuguese language. Prerequisites are: POR101 and POR201, knowledge of the Portuguese language, or special permission by the program director. This year the program offers a special SLC394 course on Brazilian culture for non-Portuguese speakers.
Applications with a $275 non-refundable deposit are due on or before March 30, 2008. Applications will be accepted after that date on a space-available basis.
Academic Program
We will learn the beautiful Portuguese language and explore many aspects of Brazilian history and culture, including lessons in cooking baiana food and different forms of dance, including the famous capoeira. A special emphasis will be given to elements of Afro-Brazilian culture that relate to religion, spirituality and the arts - such as camdomblé and umbanda, as well as the concept of axé and the influence of musical forms such as afoxé, forró and, of course, samba, on the lives of the people.
The following courses will be offered:
- POR 101 | Elementary Portuguese (5)
- POR 201 | Intermediate Portuguese (5)
- POR 313 | Portuguese Conv. & Comp. (3)
