Kampsville Field School

The Kampsville Field School for 2008 has designed three distinct academic tracks in Bioarchaeology, Archaeology and Geographic Information Systems that emphasize both empirical and theoretical training in research design and implementation, while offering students hands-on participation in ongoing professional research in the field. Work is geared for novices as well as those who wish to advance their skills.

Program Cost: $1,240
$275.00 deposit fee required for enrollment. Tuition and fees are not included with the program cost.

The Center for American Archaeology - Kampsville, Illinois

The Field School returns to the Mound House Site, an endangered Middle Woodland "Ceremonial Center" located in the floodplain of the lower Illinois River Valley. During the field season, research will focus upon the post-monumental components of Mound House. The Program also includes field trips to the Illinois State Museum in Springfield, IL, and to the Cahokia Mounds World Heritage Site near St. Louis.

Eligibility

The Kampsville Field School is an annual Arizona State University program. Students presently attending any college or university may apply. High School juniors or seniors in the concurrent enrollment program are also eligible. All Field School students are formally enrolled in Arizona State University for the duration of the Field School. They receive ASU credits that, in most instances, are transferable to other colleges and universities.

Applications with a $275 non-refundable deposit are due on or before February 4, 2008. Applications will be accepted after that date on a space-available basis.

Academic Program

The 2008 Field School offers three academic tracks - Human Osteology, Field Excavation or Geographic Information Systems and Environmental Science. Participants earn 6 academic credits at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Living Accommodations

Students reside in Kamp Store, an historical store and home converted into a museum and dormitory. Beds are provided, but bring bedding. Meals served Monday breakfast through Saturday lunch.

Cost Information

The cost of $1,240 (subject to change) includes program fees, room and board, field trips and transportation to/from airport, train station or bus terminal. Not included: ASU tuition and fees for 6 credit hours, transportation costs to Kampsville, additional meals, books or personal expenses.

The Program may allow for time which can be spent in non-Program activities. Participants may wish to travel, sightsee or participate in activities or events in which they have a personal interest. Please note that the participant is fully responsible for making arrangements and for all costs of transportation, lodging, food and additional expenses that may be associated with any non-Program activities.
