Arizona State University offers a combination package of study and travel in China. The first six weeks is an Arts, Language & Culture Study Program in Beijing. Part II is a Journey to the West of China on the famous Silk Road. Those participating in Part I will leave for China on May 30, 2008 and study in Beijing until July 12. Those joining Part II will start the excursion on July 12, 2008. Before returning to the US, we will stop by Hong Kong to observe the Pearl of Orient, in comparison with Shanghai. Students may earn 6 – 9 credits upon completion of this program.

Program of Arts, Language & Culture in Beijing - Beijing is the capital city of the People’s Republic of China and claims the best collections of China’s treasures of the past. It is home to Renmin University, where our summer language & culture study programs have been for 20 years, and to the Imperial Palace, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, and over 13 million people. Within easy reach are also the Great Wall, Qing & Ming Tombs and many other historically significant and scenic sites. During the 6 weeks of studying, students will also have opportunities to visit the Great Passage under the Heaven –Shanghai Guan, Taishan, Confucius Birth Place, and numerous museums and galleries, including a research trip to the Contemporary Arts District 798. Participants will also obtain the first chance to officially visit 2008 Olympic Nest & facility.

Journey to the West – Silk Road - Places we will visit are too many to mention in total. Silk Road was an important matrix of passages that led west from Chang An (Xi An) onto the Middle East, and to Urumqi, Turpan, Yang Passage, Binling Grotto, Dunhuang, Xi Ning, Taer Tibetan Monastery, Lanzhou, Yellow River, back to China Proper through/via Xi An, Terra-cotta & Yang Tombs. Before returning home, we will stop by Shanghai & Hong Kong, the 2 most impressive passages of China in modern days.

Eligibility

Eligibility is extended to the motivated student who is willing to be adventurous, meet new people, and experience different customs, foods and ways of life. No previous training in Chinese language is required.

Applications with a $275 non-refundable deposit are due on or before February 4, 2007. Applications will be processed after the due date until the program is full. Applications accepted after the deadline will be assessed a $100 late program fee.

Living Accommodations

Participants will be housed (double occupancy) in student residence halls during Part I of the program. One cafeteria meal per day is included.

Cost Information

The cost of $4225 (subject to change) Part I & II includes program-related excursions in China, housing, one meal a day and fees at Renmin University during Part I, and airport exit fees, as a group. Part I only (5/30- 7/12/2008) $2025.00 includes program related excursions, housing, one meal a day, room & fees at Renmin University. Part II only (7/11- 7/30/2008) $2575.00 includes program related travel expenses, room and board in China. Not included: tuition and fees for 6 – 9 credit hours, medical insurance, extra meals & food in Hong Kong, personal transportation and personal expenses, visa, airfare, extra charges and tips.

The program may allow for time which can be spent in non-program activities. Participants may wish to travel, sightsee or participate in activities or events in which they have a personal interest. Please note that the participant is fully responsible for making arrangements and for all costs of transportation, lodging, food and additional expenses that may be associated with any non-program activities.
