Locations
MOSCOW - JUNE 24 - JULY 2 & JULY 30 - 31
Our tour begins with a spectacular view of Moscow from the tower of Moscow State University, ultimately orienting our sense of the city. Touring Red Square and the Kremlin and hiking to Peredelkino (home of Pasternak) are just two of the exciting adventures awaiting the group. Seeing Andrei Rublev's "Trinity," Ilya Repin's "Ivan the Terrible and His Son", and Mikhail Vrubel's "Demon Seated" at the Tretyakov Gallery is a transforming experience.
ST. PETERSBURG - JULY 3 - JULY 13
Peter the Great's window to the West, St. Petersburg is home to some of the most stunning palaces (Petrodvorets, Tsarskoe Selo) in Europe. In addition to visiting these wonders of opulence, the group will explore the impact of the assassinations of Alexander II and Nicholas II and the blockade of Leningrad during World War II. The Dostoevsky walking tour, in which we follow the feverish footsteps of Raskolnikov from Crime and Punishment, is a cultural highlight of the tour.
SAMARA - JULY 15 - JULY 29
Once termed Russian Chicago, this merchant town turned closed city during the Soviet period is often overlooked by tourists. The group will explore the natural beauty of this region by boating on the Volga and hiking in the ancient Zhiguli mountains. A tour of the old city will also be offered, in which we will discuss the rapid pace of development in Russia. Participation in the excavation of a Late Bronze Age settlement in the steppe will be the highlight of this portion of the trip.
