Spain, a culture distinguished by 17 autonomous political communities and five constitutionally recognized languages, shaped historically by successive waves of international migration make this country an invaluable context in which to study contemporary issues in cross-cultural psychology and contemporary immigration/migration issues. This five-week program is designed to give participants a comprehensive overview of cross-cultural psychology and immigration phenomena. It combines features of a traditional study abroad program and a traveling seminar.

MADRID (JUNE 2 - JUNE 4)
The cosmopolitan city of Madrid offers a wide range of attractions, from quaint medieval quarters to ultra-modern centers. It is rich in museums and theatres, and exciting in its unique, after-dark entertainment life.
ALICANTE (JUNE 4 – JULY 4)
A charming, smaller city on the Mediterranean coast, with an abundance of summer festivals throughout the month of June, Alicante combines a rich cultural past with amenities of a modern resort. Alicante is an ideal location from which to also make day-trip excursions to surrounding coastal villages.
WEEKEND EXCURSIONS: Granada/Las Cuevas
DAY TRIPS: Toledo, Elche, Murcia, Altea, Orihuela and/or Valencia.
Eligibility
The program is open to students who have completed Introductory Psychology and who desire to study, travel and experience different customs, foods, and ways of life. Proficiency in Spanish is NOT a prerequisite.
Applications with a $275 non-refundable deposit are due on or before February 1, 2008. Applications will be processed in order of their receipt. Any applications received after the deadline will be considered on a space available basis. Non-ASU students will need to apply to the university via internet before February 1, 2008.
Academic Program
All students will take the two courses listed below, for a total of 6 credit hours. Classes are held Mondays through Wednesdays in the morning.
- PGS 498 | Cross-Cultural Psychology (Upper Division SB Psychology elective)
- TCL 314 | Issues in Immigration & Migration (Upper Division SB course; meets the University Awareness areas of H & C)
- TCL 499 | Individualized Instruction
Living Accommodations
In Madrid, students stay in a 3-star hotel in the heart of the city with breakfast provided. In Granada, students stay in a 4-star hotel bordering the famous Alhambra (Arab Palace) with meals provided. In Alicante, students stay with Spanish families in which all meals and laundry are included.
Cost Information
The cost of $3,100 (subject to change) includes housing, meals, laundry and organized cultural travel. Not included: ASU tuition and fees for 6 credit hours, airfare to and from Spain (about $1,300), transportation to and from the airport, additional meals, books, health insurance and personal expenses (approx. $25 per day).
The Program may allow for time which can be spent in non-Program activities. Participants may wish to travel, sightsee or participate in activities or events in which they have a personal interest. Please note that the participant is fully responsible for making arrangements and for all costs of transportation, lodging, food and additional expenses that may be associated with any non-Program activities.
