The diverse approaches to planning, landscape architecture, urban design and development found in central and Mediterranean Europe will be the focus of the international study program for 2008. The physical and social structure of cities, villages and the rural landscape will be analyzed to understand historical precedents, cultural differences and planning/design priorities. Innovative and trend-setting projects in sustainable design and construction are of particular interest

$275.00 deposit fee required for enrollment. Tuition and fees are not included with the program cost.

Locations

ROME MAY 10 - 15

Program orientation. We will visit the Forum and Coliseum, Vatican City, St. Peter's, public spaces, piazzas, Fontana de Trevi. We will take a day trip to Tivoli.

NAPLES MAY 15 - 17

In Naples, we will visit the City Center and Pompeii/Herculaneum

VENICE MAY 17 - 20

Students will get to experience the Canals and Campo, Sestieri, Piazza San Marco, Campanile de San Giorgio, Doge Palace, Basilica San Marco Grand Canal and Rialto Bridge. There will be a free day for students to explore on their own.

CINQUE TERRE/LA SPECIA MAY 20 - 23

The next few days the students will go to the Italian coastline and visit the hill towns of Siena, San Gimignano and Volterra. A day trip to the villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, Monterosso al Mare. Students will have another free day of exploring the Italian countryside.

ARLES MAY 23 - 27

Between Cinque Terre and Arles, students will get to stop in Monaco and Monte Carlo. In Arles, we will visit the City Market and Roman Amphitheater. Students will take a day trip to see the Roman Aqueduct: Pont du Gard. Another day trip will take students to the Provence villages of Les Baux, Roussillon and Gordes.

BARCELONA MAY 27 - JUNE 1

In Barcelona, students will get to explore the city's structure and the medieval City of Carcassonne, and experience the view from the National Palace. They will also visit L'Eixample, Barri Gotic-Gothic Quarter and Las Ramblas, and the Barcelona Pavillion built by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Other excursions: Botanical Garden, Fundacion de Joan Miro, Olympic facilities, Parc Guell, Parc de la Ciutadella, Parc Diagonal, Barcelonetta (new parks and plazas), Temple Expiadori de la Sagrada Familia, and Las Bullet. Another free day to explore Barcelona.

VALENCIA JUNE 1 - 4

The three days spent in Valencia will allow students to visit Mercado Central, Mercado Colon, Turia River Park, Jardin de las Hesperides, Umbracle Sculpture Garden, Luna Rossa base, Valencia Cathedral, The City of Arts and Sciences, Reina Sofia Palace of the Arts and the Hemisferic planetarium.

GRANADA JUNE 4 - 7

At this last stop, students will get to visit the Great Mosque of Cordoba, Alhambra and Generalife. There will be an excursion to the resort area of Costa del Sol.

Eligibility

This program is open to ASU and non-ASU students. Students may register for undergraduate or graduate credit or audit, but must pay for 6 credits of ASU tuition and fees.

Applications with a $275 non-refundable deposit are due on or before February 4, 2008, but will be accepted on a space available basis after that date.

Academic Program

This course is an intensive field study program that includes guided field trips, lectures, joint projects and workshops with European university students, group activities and prescribed small group and individual activities.

Living Accommodations

Lodging is pre-arranged for shared rooms (2-4 students per room) in modest pensions or hotels. Travel between cities and on excursions out of cities will be by 9-passenger minivans. In cities, public transportation (metro and buses) will be used. Students are responsible for public transportation costs out of their own daily expense funds.

Cost Information

The cost of $2598 (subject to change) includes: program fees, lodging, ground transportation between European cities (does not include transportation in cities), entrance fees for group activities, and breakfast at hotels. Not included: ASU tuition and fees for 6 credits, airfare, passports, books, health insurance, daily expenditures, daily expenses for other meals, public transportation, and personal expenses.

The Program may allow for time which can be spent in non-Program activities. Participants may wish to travel, sightsee or participate in activities or events in which they have a personal interest. Please note that the participant is fully responsible for making arrangements and for all costs of transportation, lodging, food and additional expenses that may be associated with any non-Program activities.
